Luc.A's post from yesterday reminded me of my friends Buick we modified in college after he forgot to brake until the last minute in the wet. We first went to a junk yard to try and find a salvaged bumper but that proved fruitless. So instead I suggested we go with lumber. He thankfully agreed -

First we had to disassemble the front end of the car and evaluate what was available to mount to.

Thankfully it turned out to be a pretty straightforward mod so we went to home depot and bought some 2x12 lumber. We then varnished the wood and put diplomat flags on each side except we decided to used full size 3'X5' flags on metal pipe conduit poles. We even trimmed what remained of the old bumper to fill in along the sides between the wood and the wheel well.

This car has since met its demise - the thing was rusting to pieces - but my buddy kept the wooden bumper before selling it for 500 bucks. Below is a picture of us heading to a NASCAR race in Charlotte.
